What's new

What's new

New features, improvements and fixes in Regex Hunter.

New feature

Talk about the daily, challenge players

Rate each daily, swap notes with other solvers, and challenge any player to a 1v1 from their profile, now or at a set time.

  • After you solve the daily, rate it Easy, Fair or Brutal and join that day's discussion. No full patterns; mark partial ideas as Spoiler.
  • Challenge a player from their profile: you play a short Spree now, and they have 48 hours to beat you on the same hunts.
  • Or pick a time: once they accept, you play the same hunts live, together, when it starts.
  • When a challenge ends, chat with your opponent for 14 days and show them your pattern.
  • Your challenges live on the Spree page, and Settings lets you choose who can challenge you.

New feature

Edit hunts while they're in review

Fix a hunt before it appears in Community, and block shortcuts with up to 10 hidden words a side.

  • Edit in review: open your hunt and choose Edit hunt, or find it under Your hunts in Studio. A turned-down hunt goes back for review when you save.
  • More hidden words: up to 10 on each side, with + Add word.

Try it in Studio.

Improvement

Smaller improvements

Livelier spree standings, a clearer play bar on phones, Error IDs you can send us, and more control over cookies.

A few things that make the site nicer to use:

  • Spree standings move. Live standings slide as players solve, and a player who leaves is marked Left instead of vanishing.
  • Spree on phones. The play bar now shows your progress as dots, so you can see what's solved, skipped and still to come.
  • Error IDs. If something goes wrong, the message now includes a short Error ID. Copy it, or use Report it to email us with it filled in, so we can find exactly what happened.
  • Cookie choices. Analytics only run if you allow them, and you can change your mind any time under Cookie preferences in the footer.
New feature

Discussions get faces and mentions

React to posts with 14 regex faces, and mention players with @ so they hear about it.

The 14 Regex faces

  • Regex faces: tap the smiley next to a post to react with one of 14 faces, like :matched: or :backtracking:. Type a face's name between colons to put it in your text.
  • @mentions: type @ in a reply to pick someone from the thread, or three letters to search every player. They get a notification.

Try them in Discussions.

New feature

Watch Regex Hunter on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok

Short videos that show regex visually, one idea at a time, plus daily breakdowns and new features. New ones most days.

We're making short videos now:

  • Regex, visually: one idea per video (classes, anchors, quantifiers, groups, backreferences, lookarounds), shown on real letter tiles
  • Daily breakdowns: a past daily solved step by step, from the obvious pattern to the shortest one
  • What's new: quick tours of new features

New feature

Discussions: search, filters and pins

Find any thread with search, sort by activity or votes, filter to open, unanswered or resolved, and keep track of your own threads.

Discussions grew up:

  • Search titles and posts. Matches are highlighted.
  • Sort by latest activity, newest, most replies or top voted.
  • Status: open, unanswered or resolved.
  • My threads and Replied show just the conversations you're part of.
  • Every row shows replies, votes and when it was last active.

Threads work better too:

  • Reply to a reply, and upvote the posts that helped.
  • The author or a moderator can mark a question Resolved. Moderators can lock a thread that's run its course.
  • Important threads can be pinned to the top.
New feature

Hints, when you're stuck

Some hunts now come with two hints from their author. They unlock after a couple of minutes, and using one costs your par star.

Stuck on a hunt? If its author wrote hints, a Get a hint button appears after 2 minutes of play, or straight away if a submit fails a hidden check.

  • Two hints, the second more specific. Hint 2 unlocks a minute after hint 1.
  • The cost: a hinted solve gets no par star and ranks after unhinted solves of the same length. It earns no ranking points, but it still counts toward your streak.
  • Hints are only offered until you solve the hunt without one.

Writing a hunt? Add up to two hints in Studio under Hints (optional). Point toward the idea, not the pattern.

New feature

Hidden checks

Some hunts now test your pattern on a few words you can't see, so a pattern that only fits the visible board doesn't count.

Look for + hidden checks on a hunt. Your pattern must also catch, or leave alone, a few words you can't see, so the shortest pattern has to follow the rule, not just the board.

  • If a submit fails, you'll see how many hidden checks failed and on which side, never which words.
  • Tap the chip for a quick explanation.

Hunt authors can add up to three hidden words on each side in Studio under Hidden checks (optional). Your sample solution has to pass them too.

New feature

Follow players

Follow players from their profile, compare on a Following leaderboard, and get a daily summary of how they did.

Open any player's profile and press Follow. There's no approval and no public follower counts.

  • Following leaderboard: after you solve a hunt, switch its leaderboard to Following to see just you and the people you follow.
  • Daily summary: the morning after a daily, the bell tells you how many people you follow solved it. Once you've solved it too, you'll also see the shortest and your place.
  • New followers show up in the bell, one line per day.
  • Manage it all in Settings › People: see who you follow and who follows you, remove a follower, or block someone. Blocked players can't follow you or reply to you, and they aren't told.
New feature

Daily rankings

A new Daily board in Rankings: your average against par on the daily, and the longest streaks.

Rankings has a new Daily board for players who come for the daily:

  • Average vs par: your average characters over or under par, over 30 days or all time. Archive replays count. You need 5 solves in 30 days (10 all time) to appear.
  • Streaks: current and longest runs of dailies solved on the day.

Only public, signed-up players are ranked. If you're not on it yet, it tells you how many more dailies you need.
