    This is the hunt where backreferences finally made sense to me. You don't care WHICH letter repeats, only that one does.

      right — capture any char, then ask for the same thing again.

        and \1 points at group 1. first time the group numbering actually clicked for me.

    why doesn't [a-z][a-z] work here? ... oh. because they don't have to be the SAME letter. never mind 🙃
